“I seldom envisage the finished painting, although I usually hope that it resembles the subject that I am about to tackle. People can usually read my work from a distance. The viewer sometimes expects to see realistic detail when looking up close, but instead is faced with complete abstraction.
Finding an unusual colour combination is like striking gold. When I open myself up to the process, rather than trying to control the situation, there is a natural love and energy that comes into the painting. Working in this way generates a vitality that is not only gratifying for me as the painter but in turn, I hope, touches those viewers who are ready for the experience.” |
